Set the mood for a perfect baby shower and be inspired by this gorgeous pink and silver soiree! This party was sent to us by Kirsty of Party Mums over in the UK. Read on for the full details!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside: A Pink and Silver Baby Shower

When our customer contacted us to create a special winter themed Baby Shower, we couldn’t wait to get planning. Her party brief included a beautiful backdrop, amazing dessert table and a stunning grazing table.

First we set about selecting the theme, it had to be girly, classy and of course have that wintry feeling, without the chill. ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ seemed the perfect fit. Selecting a colour palette, we knew we wanted baby pinks, soft greys and pearl white with a little shimmer. After trying various combinations of off the shelf colours, nothing was quite right, so a custom balloon colour palette was created, with over 1000 balloons used in total throughout the party decorations.

The showstopper of the party had to be the huge balloon wall backdrop, filled with peonies, hyacinth and white eucalyptus! This beautiful display caught the guests attention the moment they entered the room.

The dessert table was dreamy, soft white curtains, surrounded with mini balloons, positioned behind a vintage style white wooden table, sat on faux fur rugs with a mini grey wooden sledge with ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ sign and snow covered pine cones.

The grazing table had a full tulle table skirt, with white grazing crates filled with a variety of savoury snacks surrounded with fairy lights, adding a little sparkle and magic.

A traditional style white candy cart, with glass jars filled with candy treats, decorated with heart shaped fairy lights, pink and white striped paper bags and custom signage.

Activities for the Baby Shower were relaxed and informal and included ‘Wishes for baby’ and ‘Baby prediction’ cards. Both activities were fun and created beautiful keepsake cards that the Mummy to be could treasure forever.

This wonderfully pink baby shower was planned with beautiful intention! Read on for the story of this baby shower planned by @elevatedstyleevents over in Minnesota, USA. This shower featured a classic colour scheme of pink, white and gold. Read on for the details of this ultimate pink dream baby shower as recounted by Sese, stylist at Elevated Style Events.

The Ultimate pink dream baby shower

This party was a surprise baby shower thrown for Christine, a Jamaican American physician, and her husband, an emergency room physician, who both recently moved to Minnesota from Indiana for their careers.

Since she had recently moved away from friends and family, her partner physicians decided to throw her a surprise baby shower.

Her partner physicians wanted the couple to feel loved and celebrated in their new hometown. One of her partner’s is married to a baker, who knew just what to do to arrange this surprise party. The baker then contacted me, an event planner, and we set to work creating a fun-filled shower for this mom-to-be.

Such a sweet sentiment!

Pritika gives us a round-up of the day;

I organised a baby shower for my friend late in October. With the help of a few other friends, as well as Pelin at Picture Perfect Planning and, it turned out to be a huge success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the decor, the games, the food and drinks. We all had a blast and my friend, ‘mum to bee’,  was very happy, and that made all the stress of organising this worthwhile.

The 2020 pandemic has certainly not dampened our desire to celebrate – and we’ve done it so creatively! We are loving all of the ideas used by the team at Ruth Chin Events for this last-minute (ie, cancelled to due to COVID) drive-by baby shower! Read on for the details from the team.

THE PARTY DETAILS
OCCASION: Drive-by baby shower
THEME: Pretty pastels with modern trends
COLOURS: Baby blue and pink
HIGHLIGHTS; white peacock chair, arch backdrop, preserved florals

Surprise COVID drive-by baby shower

We threw a surprise drive-by baby shower for a first-time mom, whose original baby shower had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Ruth coordinated with the original venue and asked to use their outdoor space, which was perfect for a drive-by shower.

The roundabout at the venue was large enough that we could set up different stations while keeping everyone safe. Guests entered the parking lot and were guided through to the gift station, then to see, take a photo and chat with the expecting couple, and then to the last station where food was catered and individually prepackaged for all guests. Lunch included baked chicken, roasted potatoes and veggies, fruit salad, cookies and water. Since the couple did not know the gender of the baby, we stuck to a baby blue and pink colour palette.

Many items were hand made like the backdrop, tassel wands for guests to wave, and many of the florals were dyed to keep in with the palette. Décor was light and airy, with custom signage, hanging lanterns and tassel strings and florals.

Guests were encouraged to decorate their cars and participate in the celebration. With everything going on during the pandemic, guests were ecstatic to still celebrate the soon to be parents and spend a few moments with them. The mom to be was extremely surprised and loved the chance to see so many of her family and friends during this special time in her life.

‘Over The Moon’ has been a pretty popular theme for baby showers over the last few years. However, we’ve never seen it done quite like this – and we love it! This is a perfect shower celebration for mama’s who are not fans of the standard baby shower format. The styling was done by Sassy Snaps Perth, and Carly from the team give us all the details below.

THE PARTY DETAILS
OCCASION: Baby shower
THEME: Over The Moon, Celestial
COLOUR SCHEME: Shades of pink, burgundy and metallics
HIGHLIGHTS: Streamer backdrop, balloons, grazing table

A grownup over the moon baby shower

This entire shoot was inspired by my own baby shower from last year. I was super keen to style this theme again, with a few changes. So many baby showers focus on cute little baby elements, but this is a new take on the ‘Over The Moon’ theme. It can be more fun for mumma and friends, like a ‘last night out before baby duties’! There were lots of night vibes with the sparkles, metallics and glitter.

I loved introducing the new package from Born to Sparkle who has paired with Delish Ice to create Sparkle Pops! You can decorate your own ice pops with edible glitter! It was so much fun and on-theme. All the girls got OTT sparkled up with hair glitter, body jewels and face sparkles!

The backdrop was a definite highlight with all the right shades to suit the theme.

The yummy grazer setup sat high perched upon an acrylic riser.

Guests got to take home some small sparkling wine bottles and enjoyed popcorn favours as well.

The cake was out of this world amazing! It was the perfect mix of soft burgundy and pink, with added texture, and just embellishment with those chocolate shards.

The cupcakes and cookies were just to die for – I love the attention to detail!

The models all looked beautiful, with their hair and makeup all done up by Bethany Hair Artistry. They were also wearing on-trend hire threads from local Perth stores. Supporting small in so many ways!

Baby Carter’s elegant boho baby shower

What better way for a mumma-to-be to celebrate than with a daytime soirée where the venue already fits the theme! Carmen from Riverwood weddings created the perfect picnic for baby Carter’s baby shower!

Riverwood Estate, located within the northern gold Coast hinterland, was the dream wedding venue for Sophie’s I do’s 5 years ago, as her families’ private home. Now, it functions as a full private residence Wedding venue as Riverwood weddings. For her Baby shower, it was only fitting that Sophie hosted a laid back and luxurious daytime soirée with her friends at Riverwood. Engaging her sister and venue coordinator Carmen to plan and put together all the finer details, Baby Carter’s shower for the mumma-to-be was a beautifully elegant boho themed picnic.

Going for a relaxed boho picnic, carmen collaborated with Cushla from Alfresco Styling & Events, one of the Gold Coast’s first pop-up picnic stylists as this was exactly the laid-back style they sought for the Daytime event. “For seating, we used a mix of high and low white tables – we provided our custom made low whitewash timber cube tables with a selection of mix match cushions to suit the baby boy shower’s soft colour scheme of greys and beige.

Each individual setting included a water glass, wine glass and grey linen napkins with our white plates with brass/gold cutlery. The idea was to give it a light dusting of blue and gold throughout the set up which looked amazing with the white tables and white peacock chair. To compliment the stunning custom desserts and cake, this dessert display sat on our one of a kind vintage rattan bar which tied in with the relaxed boho theme perfectly. Florals were neutral colour and greenery however we did add touches of blue baby breath through the table setting and on the peacock chair. We provided and set up all florals and the styling items including vases with gold/ brass terrarium lanterns with candles burning and our white vintage peacock chair which again was decorated with blue baby breath.

Since it’s so close to Easter this uber-stylish Peter Rabbit baby shower submitted by Keri of Keri Calabrese Photography is perfect to share right now. It’s also a perfect example of how the Peter Rabbit theme is totally unisex, and can definitely be made pretty! Loving these grey-blue vibes. Keri tells us the story below. The main colour scheme was blue and white with a touch of greenery. It was held in a stunning hotel venue in New Jersey, USA.

A Peter Rabbit living garden baby shower

Kaitlin (the mama to be) admittedly had a bit of gender disappointment when she found out she was having a boy.

She had always dreamed of having a little girl and imagined what her girly baby shower would look like. When she found out she was having a boy she had to reimagine what her baby shower would look like, and she quickly became inspired by Peter Rabbit and a living garden vision.

She hired the experts at Angi and Co and Blue Jasmine Florals to perfectly execute her vision.

They chose my favourite venue, The Madison Hotel which also happens to be where I got married. They hired the beautiful conservatory which lets in lots of natural light for the dreamy affair.

Custom hand-painted cakes were displayed on a rented dessert cart decorated with a huge balloon installation from Indie Bee Balloons.

A full dessert table was located in another corner of the conservatory.

It featured custom cookies, macarons, donuts, rice krispee treats and more.

In the centre was the living garden, where Kaitlin sat to open her gifts. Her husband made an appearance for a few photo ops and some cute games.

Guests were gifted a Peter Rabbit seed packet to go along with the theme. A beautiful welcome sign greeted them as they entered and an enchanted key seating chart told them where to sit.

This is one of my favourite events of all time and I hope you love it as much as I do!

Indeed we do, Keri!

The team from Bedazzled Parties recently put together this modern, on-trend setup for a baby shower. With balloons, streamers and pretty tones, we were in love! The theme was Hey Baby, and the colour scheme was pink with a variety of lilac tones. Read on for this pink and lilac on-trend baby shower, as Ayesha of Bedazzled Parties gives us the details.

The theme for this shoot was a pastel pink/lilac iridescent combination, with the main focus being on two elements – the neon sign and the fringe wall.

In my mind this was the most perfect combination which could not fail and I was right, it looked absolutely stunning in person.

The fringe wall took me quite some nights to make, not to mention the bruised hands and strained arm from cutting every fringe by hand, but I knew it will make me feel proud at the end of it all.

The wall was mounted on a round mesh to complement the pink round backdrop with it. The moment the neon was fixed on top, it created magic. An interesting thing, the neon had interchangeable color options too, but we liked pink the most.

I selected the balloon garland colors to compliment the wall but at the same time didn’t want an overly pastel look, so went with my gut feeling and did a pearl finish.

Finally, I loved incorporating fresh blooms in the garland. The flowers added a softer look to the whole setup with those cute small palms painted to match.

I also loved the mud cake with all the textures, paired with the silkiest Swiss meringue buttercream. I couldn’t wait to get done with the shoot and indulge myself in a big slice!

The gorgeous lasercut Kiki Sprinkles cake topper that said “Best Day Ever” has to be the best cake topper! It’s amazing to see how perfect and detailed it was.

There were also little pink cannolis with the glitter touches. It just made them too pretty to eat, but they were so yum, with the smoothest custard inside.

Here at Confetti Fair, we love to talk parties. But it’s not just the decor and the desserts that we always want to focus on. Sometimes, a party is a celebration of love. Other times, it can be symbolic of closing one door and opening the next chapter of one’s life. This was definitely the case with at this gorgeous party with a stunning location, titled Here She Comes, a long awaited IVF baby shower.

Amy was kind enough to tell us about her journey which led to this joyous celebration, and we have decided to share Amy’s story here with her permission. It’s a story of sorrow and joy, so tied in to the rites of passage we celebrate with parties, yet so little told.

She tells us:

After a long 5 year IVF journey, with plenty of heartache (6 stimulated cycles, 8 IVF transfers, ectopic pregnancy, double fallopian tube removal, and miscarriage and surgery), we finally fell pregnant. We did our final cycle in January 2019 and fell pregnant with our rainbow baby due October 2019, a little girl!

IVF baby shower

Amy’s story

Amy was unofficially diagnosed with Endometriosis at 15. She had her first laparoscopy surgery at 19, and was advised that severe endometriosis had permanently damaged her fallopian tubes and parts of her reproductive system. It was then she was told that IVF would be her only option to concieve, to reduce the risk of an ectopic pregnancy.

In 2014, after being married for 2 years, Amy began her IVF journey. Ever optimistic, Amy assumed it would be a simple process, but it was anything but. At age 33, she went for her first round of IVF. Unfortunately, both the first and second rounds with this clinic failed, thus Amy and her husband decided to take a break.

Financial reasons led the couple to change clinics in 2017 and move to a bulk billing clinic. Despite the disappointment of only collecting one egg, Amy did fall pregnant. Elation soon turned to sadness as their healthy baby was found to be growing in the fallopian tubes ( ectopic pregnancy, the very thing the couple were trying to avoid).

Amy was rushed into emergency surgery as this was a life-threatening situation. The couple decided to have a double fallopian tube removal, as well as a devastating medical termination of the pregnanacy. This was necessary to save her life.

Again, the couple took an eight month break, and completed a third cycle in October 2017. This failed but resulted in two frozen embryos. In January 2018 they undertook a frozen transfer with both frozen embryos, but sadly only one survived. This embryo did result in a second pregnancy, but the happiness was once again short lived. Sadly in May 2018, at 8 weeks pregnant and after multiple scans, Amy had a natural miscarriage in the emergency room at the hospital.

After another break, and another empty attempt, Amy opted for a long cycle (which also puts one’s body in a pre-menopausal state). This was her fifth attempt at IVF. Yet again, it resulted in failure.

The moment it turns around

Fed up and tired, Amy was advised to have a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy (a procedure which has helped others fall pregnant). Despite the sad news that Amy’s endometriosis had grown back quite severe, the surgeon did inform her that if she did another round of IVF within the next 6 weeks, she could get pregnant.

In January this year, the couple completed their 6th round of IVF, and much to everyone’s joy, are now expecting their baby girl on 30th October! Congratulations, Amy! Read on for the chic baby shower details.

Details from Amy’s IVF baby shower

The colour scheme chosen for the baby shower was soft peach and blush with greenery, a scheme which greeted guests at the door.

The shower was held in a stunning residential location on the beach, a friend’s house, who kindly hosted the event.

Amy told us “after such a long wait to get to this point, we decided to throw our baby girl a fun filled party, not like your typical baby shower. We wanted it to be really special and sophisticated just like her. We chose the theme  Here She Comes and invited everyone who had been there for us through this long journey as a thank you”. They definately nailed it!

The incredible team of suppliers brainstormed a beautiful colour scheme and theme that would be chic and classic.

There were drink carts, grazing tables and a cute photo booth backdrop. “We wanted our guests to enjoy a gorgeous afternoon beachside, with good food, great conversation and amazing company”, Amy added.

Stunning on-trend floral work by Floral Fix and Nunu Designs, and close up of the perfect grazing table by A Plated Affair!

Amy concludes “we couldn’t have had a more perfect afternoon! I’m overwhelmed with the support. I have a group of event suppliers that I have worked with over the years (who watched me go through everything) and for this special day we decided to collaborate put together a BEAUTIFUL baby shower for our little girl!”

Today on the blog, a classic! Plenty of readers will love this –a vintage teddy bear baby shower in brown, various tones of blue, white and gold.
The mamma to be was expecting a baby boy and she wanted a vintage teddy bear theme for her baby shower.
The palette selected was baby blue, white and chocolate brown, but in the end different shades of blue were introduced and it was beautiful.
The baby shower was styled by Andreina of Ane’s Custom Party Decor.
She says ‘There were many handmade elements that I usually like to incorporate into every set up, it is my personal touch. This includes the baby’s name handpainted in wood letters, small handmade goodie bags with some mini merengues, personalised chocolate bars and other details”.
For the centerpieces there were white roses and blue hydrangeas which looked gorgeous in the mason jars, decorated with jute ribbon and little flowers.
At the end the cake and sweets completed the scene and two big confetti filled hellium gave the frame efect to this simple but elegant baby shower.

For this Mary Poppins inspired baby shower, we imagine how Mrs Banks might celebrate the impending arrival of a third baby.

An old hall in southern Sydney was the perfect setting for a vintage-inspired celebration. Dreamy, moody and lit by the warmth of candles, welcome to Mrs Banks’ baby shower!

You may have seen a Mary Poppins-inspired celebration before, but we wanted to take a different direction to the classic combination of navy, red and umbrellas.

What if Mrs Banks had a third baby? We imagine she is expecting again, and hosting a gathering to celebrate the impending arrival. What might her baby shower look like? Mrs Banks is a suffragette so we have drawn our colour scheme from the movement’s colours: white, green and purple, and taken inspiration from the Edwardian era.

The gorgeously illustrated invites and menus, designed by Elk Prints, were ever so reminiscent of the kites from the story. The menus, emblazoned with the line ‘A spoonful of sugar’ heralding both the abundance of sweets (including four cakes) on offer, as well as the sweet news of a baby being born!

Other features of the baby shower included long, draping tablecloths, decadent dessert cup, sweet meringues, silver candelabras and beautiful floral arrangements put together by the talented Kat of Petal & Fern.

Kat hunted high and low for a vintage pram to create a scene where Mrs Banks accepts her balloon and flower-laden gift – a beautifully made pram.

A baby shower styled perfectly for the warmer months! With its colour scheme of blue, aqua, yellow, white and gold, Baby Manning’s baby shower exuded pure warmth, happiness and blooming! Read on for the details of Sarah’s bright and floral giraffe baby shower!

Details from Sarah’s bright and floral giraffe baby shower

Sarah’s baby shower was styled with creative direction by Jappalin, founder of Flowertalk. For the styling, balloon garlands of blue, aqua and yellow dominated the party decor. The flowers used were white peonies, yellow billy buttons, yellow mini gerberas, dyed gysophillia and dyed phalaenopsis orchids. The giraffe motif featured throughout – a welcome change from the popular baby elephant theme!

The main centrepiece was a giraffe cake with ombre blue cream, cookies with watercolour blue and cream puffs. The giraffe motif also appeared in the form of a cute giraffe toy adorning the main table area.

The fruit topped dessert cups suited the bright, fresh look so well.

On-trend custom cookies also featured.

Baby shower games were also played, including a game to guess the size of Sarah’s tummy.

Mama to be looked absolutely gorgeous in her lace dress and stunning flower crown.

What a beautiful celebration!

Our friend Emily of Party Bebe recently hosted the cutest baby shower for her sister Anna! Of course,  as always, Emily certainly delivered! She takes us through the details of Anna’s baby shower cake bar here. The main focus was the cake bar, but there was also a bloom bar and a ‘bump bar’.

The location

Although Anna is now based in Sydney, I wanted to host a baby shower for her in Melbourne to bring together her best friends and close family for a fun-filled afternoon complete with delicious food and wine. The baby shower was hosted at Anna’s best friends’ house.

The invitation

As soon as I saw the invitation (designed by Danger & Moon), I knew it was perfect for Anna’s Baby Shower. Annette at Danger & Moon also designed three custom menus for us. One for the Cake Bar, one for the ‘Bump Bar’ and one for the take-home treats. Danger & Moon designs custom party and event for all occasions.

Burger Cart

Anna doesn’t usually eat much meat, but since her pregnancy, it’s all she’s wanted! So I knew a Woofy’s Burger Cart would be well received by the mumma-to-be! It was such a hit with Anna’s guests, and the burgers and fries were absolutely delicious! Woofy’s offers savoury food carts, ice cream carts, coffee and drink carts for both private parties and corporate events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. For our party, we had a choice of serving either burgers, hot dogs or tacos and fries. We went with cheeseburgers and fries and they were SO good!

Décor

For decorations, we carried the floral theming from the invitation through but also wanted to add pops of fun and bright decorations to match Anna’s personality. The amazing jumbo balloon bouquet that greeted guests on arrival was from Lombard’s, as was the balloon garland that we used in the courtyard behind the burger cart. Lombard’s also provided the striped straws for the bar, the plates and cutlery and all other party decorations.

The Cake Bar

According to our Mum and Dad, Anna’s first word when she was a baby was ‘cake’ so, of course, we had to have a cake bar at her baby shower! I found a yellow french stripe tablecloth to match the Woofy’s burger cart yellow stripe and filled the cake bar with Anna’s favourite blooms and treats. All the desserts were from LaManna Patisserie and were absolutely delicious! We served mini fruit tarts, chocolate mousse cups, tiramisu and macarons, all made by the talented pastry chefs at LaManna. Not a single dessert was left on the cake bar at the end of the party, testament to how amazing they were!  The beautiful rose gold cake bar sign and nickname ‘Baby Fig’ cake topper were custom made by the talented XOXO Design in Perth. These pieces were just perfect for the dessert bar!

The three stunning rose gold cake stands on the cake bar were from Amalfi Décor who offers the most stunning range of stands.

The Cake

The centrepiece of the cake bar was a beautiful watercolour flourless Orange and raspberry cake with orange blossom buttercream made by LaManna Patisserie. This cake was utterly delicious with bursts of orange and tangy raspberry and a cloud-like buttercream!

The Blooms

All the stunning flowers on the Cake Bar were from Hailey Paige Flowers who also provided a custom ‘Anna’s Bloom Bar rose box for the mumma-to-be. The flowers were exquisite and the Rose Box is such a beautiful keepsake for Anna.

The Bump Bar

For the bump bar, we served Bevi Prosecco Spritz, Calabria Private Bin Prosecco (both from Calabria Family Wines), magnums of Dominique Portet Rose, and for the pregnant ladies, mineral water and juices!

Take-home treats

The cake bar also featured some take-home treats for guests – adorable LETORE lolly cubes and English Rose pink heart lollipops from Sweetie Darling Candy, both of whom are based in Sydney. Sweetie Darling is an Artisan candy store offering adorable lollipops and confectionery.  I set up their English Rose lollipops in vintage milkshake glasses and they could not have looked sweeter. LE TORE Sweet filled Cubes were also perfect for the baby shower. We had a choice of four different sweet cubes for Anna’s guests to take home and they looked so chic on the cake bar!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day for the beautiful mumma-to-be! Huge thanks to all our amazing suppliers for making it such a special day for Anna!

One of the hottest trends in the wedding industry, in fact the cake world has to be the naked cake. You may have seen them at weddings, attempted to make one yourself or even ‘pinned’ it on Pinterest. A naked cake features generous layers of cake filled with scrumptious fillings such as buttercream and fruit and with the sides being left un-iced and often styled with gorgeous floral and more fruit. Naked cakes are seen as a whimsical alternative to the more ‘formal’ wedding or event cake and it is the perfect touch for a rustic wedding.

Vanilla cake recipe

Ingredients (Three 8 inch cakes)

  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 250 grams unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups caster sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk, room temperature

Ingredients (Three 6 inch cakes)

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 160 grams unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/3 cup caster sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup milk, room temperature

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius with the rack in the centre of the oven.

Grease three 8 inch round cake pans and then line the bottoms of the pans with baking paper.

In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.

In the bowl of your electric mixer, with the paddle attachment beat the butter until soft and creamy (about 1-2 minutes). Gradually add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).

Add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.

Add the flour mixture into the bowl, alternating with the milk, making sure to begin and end with the flour.

Divide the batter between the cake pans, smoothing the tops. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the centre of the cakes comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in their pans for about 5 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire rack.

Repeat the process above to prepare the 6 inch cakes (using 6 inch cake pans)

French vanilla buttercream

Ingredients:

  • 5 egg yolks
  • 250 grams caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 500 grams unsalted butter, room temperature

Place the egg yolks into the bowl of a mixer and whisk until double in volume.

Place caster sugar into a saucepan and add enough water to just cover the sugar. Boil until the sugar syrup reaches 115 degrees Celsius.

Remove the sugar syrup from heat and pour into the egg yolk mixture in a slow steady stream.

Beat the mixture until the bowl is cool to touch (between 10-15 minutes).

Once the mixture is cool, start adding the butter in small amounts. Add the vanilla extract and keep beating the mixture until it is smooth and light in colour.

Tutorial:

Step 1: Bake three 6 inch and three 8 inch cake layers using the vanilla cake recipe. (Images 32, 45, 76, 107, 115, 124, 126)

Step 2: Prepare the buttercream using the French vanilla buttercream recipe (image 159)

Step 3: Once the cakes are completely cool, cut the tops off each cake so that the    stacked cake sits level when assembled (image 143)

Step 4: Trim the edges of the cakes (image 168)

Step 5: Place a layer of the 8” cake on a cake board using some of the buttercream to attach the cake onto the cake board (image 225)

Step 6: Spread desired amount of buttercream making sure it is spread out to the edges of the cake, and stack another layer of cake on top. Repeat with the last 2 layers of cake (images 224 and 258)

Step 7: Repeat steps 5 and 6 using the 6” cake layers.

Step 8: Since this is a tiered cake, you will need to support the cake using dowels or plastic ‘bubble cup’ straws (can be purchased on eBay). I have used 7 bubble cup straws. Insert one straw in the centre of the cake and mark the straw where it needs to be cut. (Image 298)

Step 9: Cut the remaining straws at the exact same length to keep the stacked cake level. Ensure that each straw is at an equal distance away from the other so that the weight of the 6” cake is evenly distributed (images 303 and 311)

Step 10: Place the 6” cake on top of the 8” cake (image 322)

Step 11: Prepare any roses or flowers that you will be using to decorate the cake. Ensure that only pesticide-free and non-poisonous flowers are used to decorate the cake. Trim the roses so that there is only about an inch of stem. Wrap the stems in non-toxic floral tape (Never insert the bare stems into a cake). (Image 289)

Step 12: Dust the entire cake with icing sugar. Decorate the cake using strawberries and raspberries. Place the prepared roses on the cake or if you wish you can attach the roses to the cake by inserting part of the stem into the cake. (Image 350)

Notes

  • Make sure you only use the bubble cup straws as support in smaller cakes (up to a 10” cake) and don’t stack more than 3 cakes tiers high using bubble cup straws. Any larger cakes or more than 3 tiers should have a central dowel/support and larger dowels.
  • Ensure that you use a moist cake when making naked cakes since they don’t have an outer layer of icing to protect it from drying out. If you are worried about the cake being dry, you can brush sugar syrup over the cake before decorating to keep it moist.

Birds often symbolise love and new beginnings so a ‘Sweet Little Birdy’ theme for a baby shower seemed like the ideal match for the occasion.

Using their beautiful wire birdcage as the main inspiration for styling the dessert table, Events by Nat decided to combine the theme with a lime green colour, rather than the traditional pink or blue usually seen at these events.

Natural and earthy tones such as brown, cream and white were also chosen to complement the different shades of green, with an emphasis on the lime green.  These colours were incorporated into the beautiful birdy garland which was draped across the front of the table and the eye-catching tissue paper pom poms that hung over the top. A light brown backdrop with the ‘Sweet Little Birdy’ sign in a charming font and pretty design brought the buffet together.

The cake was displayed inside the birdcage and had a bird’s nest with a mama birdy and a sweet baby birdy as the cake toppers while the centre of the dessert table showcased an amazing array of candy, personalised chocolates and a personalised candy jar for each guest. The white bags which were used to fill the candy were hung from a white twig tree with miniature birds sitting on the branches.

The other desserts consisted of cute cake pops which sat in bird’s nests to resemble eggs, as well as wholemeal vanilla cookies, and chocolate and hazelnut macarons. Each guest was also given sugar coated almonds in a bird’s nest that was packaged in a clear box with a charming little thank you tag attached.

Overall, the Sweet Little Birdy themed table was rustic, earthy and sweet, and a wonderful way to welcome a new soul into this world.
