There are many ways to acknowledge and celebrate your birthday, no matter how old you are. But if you’re finding yourself feeling a little lost on how to top last year’s birthday shindig, then this is the read for you.

Let’s look at 6 ways to celebrate your birthday at any age. Remember, your age shouldn’t dictate how you feel about your birthday so these ideas are for people of all ages.

Plan a special activity or experience

If you’re gearing up to celebrate a milestone birthday (like your 30th), then this may be the year to go all-out and throw a birthday party that could’ve easily come to you in a dream. In other words, make your birthday party an experience. Hire a clear marquee, set up some fancily clad picnic tables, prepare some finger sandwiches, and create your own garden party.

And if you’re not the party-planning type, then why not plan an actual experience for your birthday that can be enjoyed all by your lonesome or with some friends and loved ones in tow? Planning an experience for your birthday is a great way to remember this significant day in years to come. 

This experience can be anything as well. For instance, if you like to be outdoors, you could plan a camping trip or a hike. If you prefer creative activities, then you may want to attend a sewing class or an art expo. Whatever you do decide, remember to choose an experience that best aligns with your interests and values so that it can feel like a genuine celebration of you and what makes you you. And remember – life is made up of experiences and not possessions, which is all the more reason to prioritise experiences on your special day!

Travel to a special destination

A birthday is a great excuse to travel somewhere you’ve either never been before or perhaps even to a destination that captured your heart long ago. You can make this a day trip out of town or you can linger a little longer and make a weekend out of it. Try and choose somewhere that you can have fun, but also somewhere that you can be peaceful and reflect. 

And like most things, travel is always fun with some company so flag your desire to travel early so that your friends and family can join you unless you want to travel solo! If you don’t have the time to go on a big adventure, then simply explore unseen destinations in your own state or region.

Treat yourself with some wellness appointments

If there is ever a day to dedicate to yourself, it is your birthday. So why not book yourself some time at your favourite spa in order to get some much-needed personal wellness time?

Treating yourself to a facial, massage, and other intimate treatment will have you looking forward to your birthday all year long. Choose a treatment or activity that you never invest in but always daydream about, as these moments come by so rarely and you should treat yourself with something meaningful.

Do something meaningful

Volunteering and donating time is something that makes everyone feel fantastic. There is a lot of data to suggest that contributing in a meaningful way to our community has exponential benefits for our mental health. Think deeply about a cause that is important to you, and start researching how you can volunteer. You might like to help out at your local community centre, or an opportunity shop or even see what services are available for community members facing insecure housing. This might be something you have never considered for your birthday, but it will be an experience that you do not forget.

Do something commemorative 

Are you someone who likes to commemorate a significant moment and create mementos for the future? Perhaps you can do something significant for your next birthday, and immortalise the moment by taking a photo you can frame, or by revisiting a significant life event. 

Scrapbooking is a fun activity to enjoy, and it will allow you to face some of the great experiences in your life, prompting some great reflection on an already meaningful day. And contrary to popular belief, arts and crafts activities aren’t just perfect for kids parties. Adults can also get plenty of joy from working with their hands to preserve all their favourite memories. And who doesn’t want to spend a day as meaningful as your birthday honouring past experiences?

Plan a celebratory feast

Finally, you shouldn’t be cooking on the day of your birthday. This means that a celebratory birthday dinner just has to be on the cards. Now is the time to consider which of the best restaurants you’ll be celebrating at! Choose one of those restaurants you have been meaning to try and get your family and friends together for a memorable meal. 

A festive meal can be a great excuse to get people together and dressed up and reflect on the past year. If possible, try and choose a cuisine that you do not often eat, so that there is a real sense of occasion to this meal. Maybe get together at a French restaurant or go for a Cambodian feast, really anything that’s a bit more exciting than the standard pub feed.

Which of these six ideas are you going to pursue for your next birthday? There are so many ways to celebrate a birthday at any age, so do not think that you need to wind down the excitement and creativity as you get older!

One can never get enough of a Barbie party! So when CottonOn released their Barbie EXTRA clothes range around about the time of the 2021 lockdown, we knew we definitely had to grab our girl gang and get shooting.

After having to postpone twice due to spicy flu (thanks but no thanks COVID), we were ready to rock! Rather than the traditional pink, we wanted to pay homage to the fun, colour and message that Barbie conveys. Including some retro elements was also a must, because Barbie just has that nostalgic effect on all of us! Lots of bright colours, a life-size boom box and a Barbie box lay the foundation for our backdrop.

Now no outfit, especially when it is EXTRA is complete without coloured hair and braids, thank you to Sydney’s queen of braids The Braid Boss! With each little one dressed in their outift and hair done, it was time to sit down to a table of desserts!

Ella Rose’s Trolls Themed 6th Birthday

You get miracles, and then you get CRAZY miracles! And this party was one of THOSE! It normally takes me 4 – 6 weeks to design a party, but when Ella Rose’s mom contacted me in a state on the Monday, and asked me to work a miracle by the Saturday, I had four days to fast forward the whole planning process! And I think you can agree the result was BRIGHT, FUN AND BEAUTIFUL, just like the gorgeous Ella Rose herself!

It was THE most perfect sunny Saturday for Ella’s party, once the thick mist had lifted in
Oranjezicht (in South Africa) and the beautiful mountains peeked over the walls of this beautiful family home. Kiddos had the time of their lives hanging out in teepees, having makeup, glitter tattoos and
nails done (girls), while boys made slime with slime kits and had hair sprayed! Super cool!

The beautiful dolls house was also a favourite play spot! Then they were enthralled with a magic
show by a magician, all enough to make them super hungry to go and feast at the party tables.
There troll hair (candy floss), magic milk, Poppy’s popcorn and a variety of sweet bakes
satisfied any sweet tooth, aswell as two beautifully designed cakes! They could also fill take-away sweetie packets to snack on or take home, with troll food, troll feet, troll tongues and glitter gumballs.

In the corner of the beautiful yard bags had been specially designed for them (HUG DANCE
REPEAT) to pop all their party favours into: stickers, rainbow sherbet straws, galaxy slime, ‘troll snot’, slinkies, POP-it’s, PEZ troll sweet dispensers, troll hair (Alice bands), musical rainbow wands as well as bright hoola-hoops!!!

If you look at these kiddies faces they truly had a magical, musical, Colourful and happy day
celebrating their friend, Ella Rose, turning 6! No troll was left behind!

Glam and Pretty Pink Dinosaurs Party

To celebrate my recent move to the Central Coast in New South Wales, I hosted a shoot featuring a cast of mainly local vendors. Not only was I made to feel very welcome, but the talent, enthusiasm and skills were next level!

This party was a very girly take on a theme that is often put together in a more boyish style. This was a fourth birthday celebration for a dinosaur loving, tutu obsessed little girl!

I wanted to put together an event where each of us could showcase our skills in something we don’t get to do every day. We opted for lots of pinks and pastels paired with the lush greens of tropical jungles and then the glam of metallics! We fused elements from many of our favourite styles.

The props, including the shimmer wall and lace tepee from Party Mamma Party Hire really brought the whole vision and aesthetic together.

Recycling Themed 3rd Birthday – Lennon’s Changing The World

My little guy has been obsessed with the trash truck since he’s been able to show expression. I wanted to create a theme for Lennon’s 3rd birthday that focused on changing the world, recycling, and saving the planet while focusing on his love for the trash truck.

We started with a color palette of sage, slate blue, brown, yellow and a darker green. From there I was set on building out a a whole center for Lennon that focused on recycling inclusive of the truck of course, a recycle can with an image of a tree as part of saving the planet, a rack with Waste Management vests and a recycling center that focused on all the items we can recycle.

Cat from Modest Peach absolutely nailed this build out and my vision. We used the recycle cart as a dessert stand to showcase all the incredibly beautiful desserts and cake made by Dien of Sweet Deetails. Dien also designed the graphic of Lennon as a Waste Recycle Worker. We also customized each child at the party with their own graphic design of themselves as a Waste Recycle Worker. Malisa from Creative Amme then created place cards of each child for their table settings. I also got customized trash can utensil holders with each childs name made and perfectly suited stir sticks of a recycle truck and the phrase “Let’s Change The World”.

Party Shop Ave did an amazing balloon install to resemble trashing coming out of cans and the truck and Shana from Sharp Balloons made Lennon’s little garbage truck balloon that he would not let go of. As always Brie from Pavan Floral stunned with her gorgeous floral arrangements. We also had bumper cars for the kids which were a massive hit provided by Busy Bee Soft Play rentals.  The highlight of all was the Waste Management team arriving. I have never seen a happier Lennon. They let him go into the truck and blow the horn. They brought him a present. It was truly special. Hopefully these kids understood the importance of recycling and striving to save this planet.  Photos by the incredible Kara Coleen who never fail to capture every event so beautifully.

A pastel pink, mint and peach 7th birthday

A pastel pink, mint and peach coloured set up as selected by the birthday girl with matching cake, cookies and macarons.

Whilst there were no traditional guests to admire the setup, Ruby’s mum made sure that the was driveway lined up with guests to wish her a happy birthday, and were thanked with a lolly bag and a matching cupcake.

The mint and pink definitely looked striking, and we’re seeing this emerge in popularity and part of a wider trend of green and pink.   

The cake was beautifully loaded up with goodies and a crown of delicious drip – the perfect leftovers for those cold iso nights (if any was left after the driveway guests took theirs)!

A ballerina high tea birthday party

Little guests got to dance and twirl at Yvette’s Ballerina Tea Party. From delicate desserts such as dipped strawberries and white chocolate mousse to sipping tea and eating cake, this tea party was full of little girl giggles. Dancing in tutus with a real ballerina was definitely the highlight of the party!

WHY WAS THIS THEME CHOSEN?
I wanted to create a beautiful feminine party that a little girl would love. What little girl doesn’t love to dance and pretend to be a ballerina?

DID YOU INCORPORATE ANY CURRENT PARTY TRENDS OR DIYS IN YOUR PARTY?

Trends: Donuts are still hot property at parties. Instead of just having the word “donuts” on the acrylic donut wall we created a custom decal “dance for donuts” to tie into the theme. Mixing modern and antique décor is big in the interior design space at the moment. We incorporated a little of this in the party with the mix of vintage and acrylic pieces.

Combining deep gem colours with softer pastels is on the rise for kids birthday parties. We chose the pastel pink and gold to keep the party feminine and combined this with burgundy to add rich depth.

DIY: Decorative wire mannequins were spraypainted gold and we threaded tulle around their waist to create a tutu. We decorated ballet shoes with lace, pearls and flowers to tie into the theme.

My inspiration behind the styling for this milestone birthday was the lemon fruit! To achieve this, we designed custom paperie, including mini lemon-shaped animal farm activity programs, & custom backdrop arches, complete with tagline ‘Our Main Squeeze is One’.

A dessert cart and highchair in crisp white was the perfect contrast for stunning lemon-themed desserts. Dessert highlights included cute lemons piped onto the birthday cake, and arch shaped cookies decorated to match the backdrop arches.

A pastel lemon balloon garland featured pops of lemon-shaped balloons complete with little leaves. A matching number ‘1’ balloon mosaic greeted guests and looked amazing against the rustic farm door.

With the party held inside The Workshop at Landsdale Farm, party entertainment included animal barn time & feeding, as well as a private cart ride for guests around the farm.

Having had to reschedule this milestone celebration several times due to the birthday girls’ daddy being stuck overseas due to COVID border restrictions, it was joyous to see this beautiful family reunited together and enjoying this special milestone.

We’ve gone bananas 7th birthday party

Lea turned 7 and was so excited to finally be able to have a party with her friends and regain some childhood normalcy. When I asked her what theme she wanted she said “I just want to go bananas”. So our banana theme was born.

I wanted to create a stunning yellow vintage banana concept. With the help of my secret weapon, @3littlebirdseventplanning who burned the midnight oil painting every piece in different shades of yellow, I was able to achieve that. The stunner’s were definitely the vintage chairs that we hand selected and painted to resemble an ombre yellow.

We maintained the ombre concept with the tableware and the desserts. The table stunned everyone. I had never seen such a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The bright yellows were so perfect for this summer frontyard party.

Each touch was thought out from the banana place cards done by @annejonescalligraphy to the banana stir sticks by @creativeamme.

The banana cake and mini donuts were the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. @janice.w0ng just gets it.

The kids jumped around in a pastel yellow bounce house from @Bouncecouture that was ballooned to keep up with the ombre concept by Shana Sharp of Sharp Balloons.

Lea had an amazing time and so did her friends. It was so nice to see so much joy in their faces. The kids went home with cookies from  @DoughyDogs and custom tote bags.

Silver and white cloud theme birthday

When a vision becomes reality, magic happens! Em from White Cocoa says “I always tell everyone that my daughter is truly a dream come true. She is the sweetest, happiest little child. So, for her second birthday, I thought ‘a dream come two’ would be a great theme!”

The uber-talented mama made the invite, did the styling and set up, and baked the cake! “All with a lot of love”, she tells us. “I wanted it to feel like we were up in the clouds. Even though it was a very small and intimate party due to COVID-19, it was a perfect, dreamy day”. We won’t argue with that – dreamy indeed.

Like many other pre-teen boys in our country, Jakobi has been totally absorbed in the football during Covid. One of the only professional sports that have been able to continue during this time, the popularity of it just seemed to keep growing in our household and so, Jakobi’s 8th birthday could only be an Aussie Rules party.

Using a palette of green for the grass and dark blue to represent a night game, the paperie by Eninkma was created first and features banners on it of every team Jakobi has watched.

We created a football oval table from an old table that we glued grass onto and this ended up to be the perfect backdrop to Sugar Pop Bakery’s stunning football player cake pops.  The cookies from Patty Mac were beyond amazing, with the brief to be ‘just complement the invitations’. It is safe to say that Patty not only complemented them, but created the most amazing designs that were truly amazing.

Other features of the party were football chocolates by Creative Temptations and also a nod to the amusing with Chupa Chup Melody Pops substituting in for ‘umpire whistles’ and lolly teeth being a substitute for ‘mouthguards’.

Due to Covid lockdown, the party was held at home with just family and at the end, large drink bottle canisters were filled with party treats. These, along with a football were given to each of Jakobi’s friends as we drove past and dropped them off to his friends and shared photos.

Glam science tween birthday party

A double-digit birthday represents the first decade of a child’s life, so a celebration is an absolute must. After all, the parents have survived their first decade of raising their headstrong child as well!

My vivacious and eccentric child coined the term ‘science glam’. Miss Alyssa is a big fan of pink, so we came up with a palette of pinks and purples. This was the foundation for the décor, the food and even the games!

Next, we needed props so we had our friends at Tresor’ Trove decorating design and construct a custom made backdrop prop of a pink and white beaker. The beaker needed to be brought to life so an organic balloon garland to resemble the bubbles coming out of the beaker was added for dimension along with clear plinths filled with confetti balloons.

For the games, I wanted to keep it interactive so each child had a mini slime kit in a foil tray to work from complete with scents and pigment to add. Check out the science goggles each child received at the beginning of the party to bedazzle themselves!

This 40th celebration was for Kim who runs event lighting business Love Glows. She gives us the details below.

For my 40th we wanted to create a celebration that embraced the big 40.

It was a moody, dark and stormy scene, in a microbrewery in the heart of Newcastle.

The brewery had never seen so much confetti on their floors – thankfully, the head brewer was off for the day!

A massive balloon and streamer roof installs, cheeky neons, moody florals and styling and jewels to die for all featured. We also wanted this to be unique, different and show what this regional city could do. A great bunch of local vendors working together to create this vision of an off-the-charts birthday party!

To finish off, there was an elegant cake smash done with a butterscotch flavoured mud cake and buttercream icing.

Pink floral girly birthday party

What little girl doesn’t love putting on their favourite party dress and spending all day with her besties! Aniah invited besties Aria and Havana to an afternoon celebration filled with sweet delights, plenty of giggles, singing and dancing.

All of the girls got to chose their favourite dresses from the newest party collection by Little Miss H, featuring the most gorgeous floral prints, soft fabrics and stylish designs. They absolutely loved twirling around in their tulle party skirts and sneaking treats into their dress pockets. The girls helped themselves to sweet treats and a decadent fruit and chocolate grazing board by Platter Parlour.

To match in with the floral and pink theme, the low picnic-style party table was set with pastel pink and purple, floral and rose gold partyware from Lovely Occasions, featuring the newest range of bonbon party favours and easy to hold popcorn snack cones designed by PAPERplayground. A mini balloon garland draped over the end of the table brought an element of fun to the party and the girls loved playing and dancing with it.

Florals featured in every element of the party decor thanks to Sage Flower Crowns. The large floral number made the perfect party centrepiece, with the colours complimenting the pastel theme. Matching florals were also scattered throughout the balloon garlands, party table and grazing board. The balloon garlands featured custom colours in chalky pinks and lavender to frame the photo booth which the girls loved posing in while Larissa Julianna Photography captured all their beautiful and funny moments.

The party featured the mini and large DIY Balloon Garland Kits in custom colours from Lovely Occasions.

An Arctic wonderland birthday party

A few of our favourite things from this party included the gorgeous backdrop illustrations, the beautifully decorated donuts and beautiful balloon accents.

Lisa gives us the details:

Our inspiration for this beautiful party was winter. The birthday girl was born in the month of January, so we wanted to represent the cold weather by using white and blue tones as well as a big polar bear. The guest of honour loved ballerinas, so we incorporated a ballerina with a blue tutu illustrated by Karamfila as well as the fairy mouse to add that fairytale touch to the party. We hope you like it as much as we did.

The illustrations were truly stunning.
