A vintage Minnie Mouse second birthday party

Birthday girl, Zara is right about the age where she was starting to understand and like the experience of Disneyland when the pandemic hit.

Her family knows how much she loves Disney, especially Minnie Mouse, and since they couldn’t take her to Disneyland to celebrate her 2nd birthday they decided to do something more Covid friendly.

Her creative mom, Shumaila, thought why not “do the next best thing – bring Minnie’s house to her! Sadly we, had to minimize the setup and bring it all indoors due to the rain, but hey that’s 2020, we are rolling with the punches and making the most of it!”

From the beautifully made backdrop to the handmade desserts to the Minnie Mouse themed balloons, an adorable little two-year-old was able to enjoy her birthday in her own little Minnie Mouse themed party.

The design was created by the birthday girl’s mom, Shumaila Panhwar, owner and founder of So Cal Event Planners. Shumaila was inspired by vintage Micky & Minnie so she went with the simple colour theme of pink, grey, and white to pay homage to the beauty of the old vintage styled Disney. In addition, she came up with the idea for the backdrop area and added a photo-op with Minnie Mouse – just like families do when they meet all the characters at Disneyland. You can see the vintage theme carried throughout the event with the blush velvet chairs, vintage dresser and rose gold candles laid out across the backdrop display.

There was thought put into every aspect of the event including the custom colours of the balloons which were double stuffed to create a unique marble grey.

No party is complete without a cake and this event was no different. Sweetest Gallery crafted a beautiful three-tier Minnie Mouse birthday cake perfectly in line with the event. They also created all the amazing desserts such as the custom Minnie Mouse cake pops, cakesicles, and chocolate covered oreos.

A beautiful intimate celebration at home with just the family. What little girl wouldn’t love a birthday party like this!

A Frozen II inspired fundraiser

Upon entering the hall, guest’s eyes lit up as they spotted Olaf and Nokk ice sculptures, together with a crowd favourite giant Sven prop. The children’s tables were covered in beautiful fabrics and decorated in glitter trees and autumn leaves, suggestive of the enchanted forest featured heavily in Frozen II.

The children were kept entertained with a ball pit and toys, whilst waiting to be bedazzled with face sparkles and glitter tattoos, including a fitting koala tattoo.

Starstruck guests met Elsa and Anna for photos before the singing entertainment began.

Grazing boards were a healthy start to afternoon tea before children enjoyed exquisitely decorated cookies, magnum cake pops, donuts, and cupcakes finished with hand moulded and painted chocolate autumn leaves. Parents enjoyed cheesecake dessert pots complete with Bruni chocolate flames.

Astrid of Paper Playground designed a suite of custom paperie for the event, including wraps for the take-home gift boxes. Gift boxes were filled with Olaf chocolate pops, custom lollipops, vanilla-scented Frozen playdough, and fairy floss baubles which were personalised as place cards.

A raffle raised additional funds, with prizes including family passes for bowling and ice skating, a voucher for a children’s hair salon, and a phenomenal Elsa balloon twist.

The energy in the room was wonderful, the kids had an amazing time, parents were so appreciative of everything included, and it was all for a wonderful cause.

I was blown away by the support offered by all the suppliers, who I now consider industry friends. They embraced my detailed requests and used it as an opportunity to showcase their talents whilst doing their bit to help. The smiles on children’s faces made all the work worthwhile, and I had the utmost pride transferring just shy of $1,200 raised to WIRES.

A nostalgic Toy Story birthday party

This kids party really delighted children and parents alike by paying tribute to the cross-generational and beloved ‘Toy Story’ film series. Décor, desserts, and entertainment drew inspiration from all four films to deliver nostalgia for guests as Asher celebrated her 6th birthday!

Box card invitations, designed as the Sunnyside donation box, were proudly distributed by the birthday girl.

I spotted Adam Southam’s Toy Story fan art on Etsy and fell in love with its bold colours. I was thrilled when Adam agreed to modify a design into a custom backdrop, as this set the tone for the entire party.

As guests entered, eyes widened as they were drawn to the backdrop and fiery rocket trail balloon garland streaming from a Space Ranger rocket ship, as a giant Buzz Lightyear balloon stood by. Balloons from Favor Lane Party Boutique in fiery tones were perfect for the talented girls from Little Winks Party’s to craft this striking garland.

Balloons didn’t end there, with Bunny and Ducky inspiring my choice of colours for a garland cascading down a carnival themed cotton candy cart. Bunny and Ducky cotton candy bags hung from pegs, a nod to the two hanging as prizes eager to be won on a carnival game. A Buzz Lightyear toy was cable tied to the cart, reminiscent of Buzz also being cable tied as a prize.

Balloon artist Doug from Blown Up exceeded expectations when he crafted an arcade game claw with squeeze toy Alien onto a headband for the birthday girls Mum to complement her Pizza Planet t-shirt. Doug also created a Billy Goat and Gruff three-headed sheep to complete the birthday girls’ Bo Peep costume.

Adjacent to the cotton candy cart stood a directional sign featuring arrows to places featured across all four films. Flag bunting and replica Andy’s drawings adorned walls, whilst a pin-up board mimicked that in Andy’s room in Toy Story 1.

Photobooth props served as the perfect opener when entertainers Bo Peep and Woody arrived as they were a fun way to encourage kids to gather for a group photo before games began.

Bo Peep and Woody had the kids enthralled with fun games such as crowd favourite ‘Bonnie’s Coming’ and Pin the Tail on Bullseye complete with personalised tails.

Children’s tables were given a classic feel, with vintage napery and tablecloths complimented by bright table wear. Red striped vintage icon napery complimented the blue plates, and blue striped napery contrasted beautifully with alternate yellow plates. Glass milk bottles were finished in alternating red and black vinyl decals and topped with delicious mini donuts. Industrial chairs were finished with identical vinyl decals to the milk bottles, tying the look together.

The dessert table featured an array of sweet treats such as Forky marshmallow pops in mini wheelie bins, Buzz Lightyear and Alien cake cones, lost scattered ‘Billy Goat Gruff’ cupcakes, Lotso’s Tonka truck filled with strawberry and marshmallow kebabs (a nod to Lotso’s strawberry scent), Pizza Planet boxes filled with pizza cookies, and a darling Bo Peep doll cake left pondering ‘have you seen my sheep Billy, Goat and Gruff?’

Favors included Slinky Dog chocolate tubes, Woody and Jessie Pringle cans, and Ducky and Bunny fairy floss which were taken home in character gift bags. Gift bags sat proudly in bright yellow and blue cubes, providing the perfect opportunity to expand décor and treats off the main dessert table.

The Ferris wheel cupcake stand was a tribute to Duke Caboom leaping from the Ferris wheel. I made ‘Yes I Canada’ maple leaf and Canadian Flag picks to finish the Ferris wheel cupcakes, together with Forky’s to finish the remaining cupcakes.

To calm the kids before concluding, each child crafted their own Forky to take home as a toy, not a spork!

Asher declared this was her most favourite theme yet and asked to repeat the same theme next year!

A modern styled Frozen birthday party

My big girl turned three with a celebration to match, a Frozen theme party! The party featured all things Ana and Elsa, with a dash of pink, purple and icy blues.

This mama started her own party buisness earlier this year so we had a custom colour streamer wall and a balloon installation to match from Babe Instant Party Hire, which wouldn’t be complete with a poppin’ neon from The Kings of Neon!

Together with my sister, we and Iaid out a spread of all things yummy in the form of a graze fit for a princess!

My sister created an amazing cake from her business The Flour Shop.

It was all photographed by Sticks And Stones Photography and she did a wonderful job at capturing a very special day.

We challenged 23 talented party vendors to design a party inspired by a USA location.

Creative Themes in Perth teamed up with Glass Slipper Entertainment for an absolutely magical Disneyland themed kids party.

The Ultimate Mini Disneyland Kids Party

What made you choose your location for United States of Party?

When looking for a location for the shoot there were two key factors that were important; one, that the venue had a large space that was a blank canvas so that we could recreate a mini Disneyland experience. The other, that the venue could be booked for children’s parties, so that readers could see the possibilities of having a Disneyland inspired party recreated at the venue with all the different lands, or one theme like a wonderland themed tea party with the Princess or an Interactive play zone in Adventure Land with the Cowboy and Cowgirl.

What inspired your shoot?

Children love all the wonder and magic of Disney, and we were inspired by the happiest place on earth to create this Disneyland Birthday Party.

We wanted to recreate some of the most magical moments at Disneyland, with singing and dancing in Main street, playtime in Adventure Land, Mad Tea Party in Wonderland, Storytime at the Royal Hall and a Fairy-tale Spa.

One of the most exciting experiences at Disneyland is the interaction that children have with their favourite characters, so the themed lands were designed so children could meet and share a magical moment with their favourite characters.

Did you incorporate any current party trends or DIYs in your shoot? If yes, what were they?

One of the current trends in children’s parties is having a designating interactive play area. We created an interactive play area in Adventure Land with play equipment from Perth Toy Hire, which we named after Disney Rides and attractions. This area was hosted by the Cowboy and Cowgirl to keep the children entertained. In Wonderland, we created the mad tea party where the guests got to enjoy custom mini personalised treats of donuts, tarts and cakes.

DIY element included custom designed autograph and Disneyland inspired passports, so the children could have their favourite characters write a message and receive a stamp at each land they visited.

Many of us love planning a party. Even those of us not in the industry want to have a hands-on experience with our parties. Designing, styling, and coordinating the perfect ‘do’ can give hours of fun.  But if you’re anything like us, you want everything to match perfectly – and the tiniest deviation just won’t work!

For all their popularity, licensed character parties are the most difficult to style as items can come from different sources, in a range of colours. This can sometimes give a less coordinated look. Also, you might be restricted creatively. There are other reasons why too, such as the fact that buying a bunch of licensed items would likely work out to be more expensive than a few plain coloured items.

Below, an chic Trolls party using muted versions of the colour scheme, and the only identifying factor being the Poppy topper peeking out from the cake.

A breakdown of elements for hosting a modern and stylish licensed character party

Here are some tips you can use if you are looking at putting together a unique style licensed party. Whether you’re doing your own design or working with a party professional (just be careful not to infringe copyright if you are doing paid work), combining a couple of these elements work really well to convey the character or theme you are trying to channel.

Colour Palette

I believe this is the first place to start. The colours definitely help build a strong association with a theme, even if there are few other identifying elements. For example, when I see red and purple together, I immediately think of the Little Mermaid. I never noticed that her hair was 100% pure red until I put the two colours together. If you’re not convinced, test it yourself by doing this cool Disney colour scheme guessing game!

However, don’t be afraid to experiment, such as going monochrome or using pastel tones of the same shades –as long as you have some other identifying elements.

Patterns

This is another way to generate a feel for a theme. For example, star patterns always work well for most superheroes, perhaps even Star Wars. Polka dots are classic Minnie and Mickey – but why not mix it up by replacing the ears with another simple element? Stripes, of course, are perfect for Dr. Seuss. If you’re not techy or design savvy, you can easily create a pattern by cutting out stars or other shapes (or even washi tape or stickers in simple shapes), and sticking them to a plain background. This could work well on favour bags, or even a backdrop.

Shapes

This one is just an extension of the pattern concept, but it works really well when a particular element is strongly associated with a character. For example, you can draw a flower for Trolls, or cut three black circles for mouse ears and head, stars and speech bubbles for superheroes. Some other ideas include a shield for Paw Patrol. Try incorporating a couple of shapes to create a motif across all of your DIY/custom party decor. For example a triangle (wizard hat) and thunderbolt would be perfect for a Harry Potter inspired party.

Fonts

You can incorporate an associated font if you can find it online (just make sure you purchase the correct one and it is approved for your use, if you are working with a party professional they will be able to help out). For subtlety, combine a font that is strongly associated with a character with an unrelated complimentary font, and use it on your stationery.

Some Paw Patrol inspired favour stickers I created. I did not let myself be restricted by the branded colours, although I did use the shield shape. 

If you want to use the real deal licensed products in your party set up, try to think outside the box with products. For example, you can buy official stickers to decorate paper cups, buy character fabrics for tablecloths, or make party hats out of licenced wrapping paper adhered to card! If you want to keep it subtle, just focus on one or two official products.

All of these tips should also work with other licensed or trademarked brands, including clothing or sports teams.

No really, it is.

When the birthday girl asks for a princess party, what do you do to make it just that little bit more extra? You invite the princesses themselves to come along!

This was truly a gorgeous effort by Stylish Soirees Perth, who together with Glass Slipper Entertainment put a truly magical celebration at the very fitting Darling’s Day Out venue in Perth,

The colours were soft, but not quite a pastel, and the look was classic with a touch of modern. The balloon garland was embellished with rose gold to give it an extra luxe look. The children with their pretty attire

As well as being entertained by their favourite princesses, the children danced and also got to dig into the pop-cart and cupcakes!

Palms were minimal, replaced by monsteras, green and blue was understated and pretty pink was in! This was a feminine yet tropical affair.

Helen and Catherine, the sister duo (one a maker, the other a baker) behind Ishe & Co,  came together with their talents and delivered a party that was on-theme, beautiful and refreshing.

The perfectly positioned elements of the dessert table meant that there was no need for a traditional backdrop to fill the space. The balloons, tall cake, plant fronds and felt board balanced the table nicely. The tables were also awash in pink, broken up by the leaf placemats and the cute jelly bean and fish cups. All other food as well as the entire styling and photography was done by the talented team of Ishe & Co.

I can’t stop raving about this party! Every element is well thought about and comes together harmoniously to create something amazing!
