The shoot featured a balloon garland, neon signage, a grid backdrop and a dessert graze. The neon look has everyone screaming for more right now! This one was on hire from Stoke Rental Co., but you can get them custom made.

Loving the lashings of pink and red everywhere – another trend that has been filling our feeds this year.

This grid backdrop with a timber frame is a great alternative to the traditional steel-only grid frames.

The Forest Chapel is a wedding ceremony venue in Terrigal. The Chapel is a unique homegrown site, perfect for couples who are after a natural, relaxed outdoor wedding. Juxtaposed against the modern balloons and neon really makes for a stunning look.

Disco-themed bridal shower: details

Time to pull out the roller skates and pump up the 70’s disco dancing tunes!

We wanted to create a super fun Bridal Shower featuring our Bridal Party t-shirts featuring Bride, Brides Babes and Babe of Honour.  We enlisted the help of some dancing divas who were ready to get their shimmy on.

We think that metallic hues are a must at the moment and so we took the gold elements in the bridal shirts and broke all the rules and mixed it up with bright metallics and silvers and to really make it a disco fever fiesta. Its a trend that you can have lots of fun with and takes you back to bubble gum and roller skating days.

There was confetti and sparkles for days but we wanted to show that bridal showers don’t have to be all bridal brunches, high teas and picnics!

A pastel bridal shower

Best friends, bubbly, and brunch – what more does a girl need?

The best way to celebrate in your wedding lead up is with your besties, a morning brunch enjoying sweet treats and champagne!

The inspiration for this party came from the mixed pastel tableware by Australian designers, Paper Eskimo, featuring a beautiful confetti design and eco-friendly wooden cutlery. For the main focus, we transformed a blank outdoor space with an incredible pastel balloon installation by Lovely Occasions.

Oma and Eve whipped up some sweet treats in keeping with the pastel theme with an ombre selection of chocolates, cupcakes ice cream cones and light and creamy pastel mousse.

Little White Couture completed the overall look with our range of bridal robes and PJs (because who doesn’t want to feel luxe and comfy). Matched with our leather flower crowns and floral sashes, brought the bridal shower look together and would be the perfect DIY option for brides to recreate.

Set amongst the natural beauty of the Northern Territory, the styling of this wedding was literally a ‘marriage’ (excuse the pun) of such diverse elements. Where the magical and ancient landscape of the top-end meets modern neon, native florals meet old-world crystalware, and drone footage beautifully captures it in all its glory. The party was styled by Darwin event duo Creative Two, in the Mary River region.

An on-trend neon sign with the couple’s names which hung from an arbor was beautifully embellished with florals.

The colours were burgundy and navy with a touch of gold and vibrant natives to contrast the deep red earth of the outback. The table setting featured crystal glasses, cloth napkins and metallic vases, in keeping with the luxe theme.

No outdoor festivities are complete without festoon lights!

Speaking from personal experience, I preferred the kitchen tea, as it meant I got to receive a lot home related registry stuff that I didn’t own. In addition, I felt it would be easier on guests (especially close family) because they could buy one larger item that would also cover the wedding, or buy a set of items and give half at the kitchen tea and a half at the wedding. Even if you and your partner are living together, I still think there are useful appliances that can be put on a registry and purchased for the event. Let’s be real – the stuff is expensive and people usually like to buy something nice for a wedding – whether individually or pooling with others.

Most kitchen tea functions tend to be hosted at private venues. Not only can you save money this way, but it is also less stressful. Also, most Kitchen Teas are chilled affairs and a great opportunity to get together with the women in your family for a nice quiet afternoon.

After I finished floristry at TAFE, I started doing flowers for friends’ weddings, then for friends of friends – it really just grew from there. Today my work still focuses on weddings but I also do flowers for a lot of other events such as flower crown workshops for hens parties, which are heaps of fun.

Proportions are really important in floristry, so take a close look at the vase you’ll be using. The height of your arrangement depends on the shape of the vase, but as a general rule the height of your arrangement from the top of the vase to the tallest flowers should at least be the same height as the vase, if not be a bit taller.

If you’re going to be running around organising a lot of other things on the day of the party, you probably don’t want to be arranging flowers too – consider using native or tropical flowers and you can make the arrangements a few days in advance.

We hear you’re a bit of a compulsive vase collector – do you have any tips for picking vases?

I love cut glass vases and the glazes on Australian pottery but I encourage people to think broadly about what you could put arrangements in, especially if you’re working to a theme.

Vintage drinking glasses and decanters, Campbell’s soup cans, teapots – if it holds water it can probably hold a flower arrangement!

Keeping flowers in a cooler part of the house and away from direct sunlight always helps, and I definitely recommend replacing the water regularly and re-trimming the ends of the stems.

Remove leaves from the parts of the stems that will be sitting in water, as they’ll otherwise go off really quickly, which reduces the life of the arrangement.

A lot of florists sell sachets of flower food, but you can make your own by adding a tiny bit of sugar, lemon juice and bleach to the water.

What floral trends stand out for you?

At the moment flower arrangements tend to have a more free-flowing, unstructured shape to them. When you think about the ‘90s, wedding bouquets tended to be perfectly round, but now we’re seeing a lot more natural, even wild shapes, which I love.

That’s a tough one, because every time I go to the flower markets I’m seeing something new, but I’ve loved dahlias for as long as I can remember. There’s so much variation and they always make a statement.

But so many flowers that come a close second: blushing bride proteas, sweet pea, hydrangea, delphinium, poppies, hellebores… I could go on for ages!

We wanted our wedding to be a casual celebration, filled with all our favourite things; good food, good drinks, good company, fairy lights and lots of flowers!

And we were very lucky to be able to do just that.

The location

We found a house in Yarra Junction, Victoria,  with picturesque views of the mountainside and we knew it was perfect for us. We love a good view, and the house could sleep 12 people, allowed dogs and had a commercial kitchen.– Perfect for our idea of holding an intimate family cook-up.

As I was working part-time in the styling industry, I was super excited about being able to style our own special day. The vibe I wanted to achieve was minimal and casual, with a colour palette of black, greenery and a touch of pink. Working with my florist (and old friend) Cassie from Edward and I was so much fun – she did an incredible job and went above and beyond. In the days leading up, Cassie was spray painting foliage black to create my dream look. The black added some dramatic depth, which was then mixed with a touch of softness with pampas grass and pink florals.

A handcrafted occasion

I love to bring handmade elements into my events when I can (cue my “crafternoons”). In this case, I spent a bunch of time making a few different elements. Being such a simple setting and casual day, I didn’t want to go over the top, so I stuck to a few key pieces:

Invitations As part of my engagement surprise, James had drawn a picture of us, and drawn some stencil art which represents us (he’s the lion, I’m the giraffe!) so I couldn’t wait to use these on our wedding invitations!

Food was all made from scratch, and we all pitched in on the day to help make our idea of a big family cook-up come true.

My sister made beautiful cupcakes (in my colour theme of course) which we decorated with roses. James’ sister made us a lion and giraffe cake, absolutely gorgeous!

We finished the weekend up with a few friends over on the Sunday, which really topped it off. They were all so excited and happy for us. We even made an appearance for them in our suit and dress!

Personalised details

I’m also really glad that I got James’ friends involved for him. In the build-up to our wedding, my sister organised a ‘hens’ celebration for me. I felt so special on this day, with all of my favourite girlfriends in one room. I wanted James to feel as special as I had! Since we weren’t having friends there on our actual wedding day, I thought it was even more important to involve them for him. So, I asked a bunch of his pals to each put together a letter to James. What they came up with was awesome – drawings of the two of us, stories of him growing up, stories of how he deserves the best, and one of his friends put together a full book! He had a good laugh and felt the love, which is all I wanted. His friends said to me it was nice that they could be involved somehow, too. I put these in a box for him, which was titled “A little bit of man love on your wedding day”.

The Dress

I love my dress! My good friend Kristen, from Dressmaking and Such, made my dress, a cape, a surprise bridal robe for me, and James’ pocket square out of my dress fabric. My dress was super simple, a tiny train and pockets (yes!). The cape was beautiful and floaty, I felt so special. I absolutely love everything Kristen made for us – the fabrics, gahhhh. There’s no rule against wearing a wedding dress to work right?

Vanilla cake recipe

Ingredients (Three 8 inch cakes)

• 3 cups plain flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 250 grams unsalted butter, room temperature
• 2 cups caster sugar
• 4 large eggs, room temperature
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 cup milk, room temperature

Ingredients (Three 6 inch cakes)

• 2 cups plain flour
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 160 grams unsalted butter, room temperature
• 1 1/3 cup caster sugar
• 3 large eggs, room temperature
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2/3 cup milk, room temperature

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius with the rack in the centre of the oven.

Grease three 8 inch round cake pans and then line the bottoms of the pans with baking paper.

In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.

In the bowl of your electric mixer, with the paddle attachment beat the butter until soft and creamy (about 1-2 minutes). Gradually add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).

Add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.

Add the flour mixture into the bowl, alternating with the milk, making sure to begin and end with the flour.

Divide the batter between the cake pans, smoothing the tops. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the centre of the cakes comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in their pans for about 5 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire rack.

Repeat the process above to prepare the 6 inch cakes (using 6 inch cake pans)

French vanilla buttercream

Ingredients:

• 5 egg yolks
• 250 grams caster sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 500 grams unsalted butter, room temperature

Place the egg yolks into the bowl of a mixer and whisk until double in volume.

Place caster sugar into a saucepan and add enough water to just cover the sugar. Boil until the sugar syrup reaches 115 degrees Celsius.

Remove the sugar syrup from heat and pour into the egg yolk mixture in a slow steady stream.

Beat the mixture until the bowl is cool to touch (between 10-15 minutes).

Once the mixture is cool, start adding the butter in small amounts. Add the vanilla extract and keep beating the mixture until it is smooth and light in colour.

Tutorial:

Step 1: Bake three 6 inch and three 8 inch cake layers using the vanilla cake recipe. (Images 32, 45, 76, 107, 115, 124, 126)

Step 2: Prepare the buttercream using the French vanilla buttercream recipe (image 159)

Step 3: Once the cakes are completely cool, cut the tops off each cake so that the    stacked cake sits level when assembled (image 143)

Step 4: Trim the edges of the cakes (image 168)

Step 5: Place a layer of the 8” cake on a cake board using some of the buttercream to attach the cake onto the cake board (image 225)

Step 6: Spread desired amount of buttercream making sure it is spread out to the edges of the cake, and stack another layer of cake on top. Repeat with the last 2 layers of cake (images 224 and 258)

Step 7: Repeat steps 5 and 6 using the 6” cake layers.

Step 8: Since this is a tiered cake, you will need to support the cake using dowels or plastic ‘bubble cup’ straws (can be purchased on eBay). I have used 7 bubble cup straws. Insert one straw in the centre of the cake and mark the straw where it needs to be cut. (Image 298)

Step 9: Cut the remaining straws at the exact same length to keep the stacked cake level. Ensure that each straw is at an equal distance away from the other so that the weight of the 6” cake is evenly distributed (images 303 and 311)

Step 10: Place the 6” cake on top of the 8” cake (image 322)

Step 11: Prepare any roses or flowers that you will be using to decorate the cake. Ensure that only pesticide-free and non-poisonous flowers are used to decorate the cake. Trim the roses so that there is only about an inch of stem. Wrap the stems in non-toxic floral tape (Never insert the bare stems into a cake). (Image 289)

Step 12: Dust the entire cake with icing sugar. Decorate the cake using strawberries and raspberries. Place the prepared roses on the cake or if you wish you can attach the roses to the cake by inserting part of the stem into the cake. (Image 350)

Notes

• Make sure you only use the bubble cup straws as support in smaller cakes (up to a 10” cake) and don’t stack more than 3 cakes tiers high using bubble cup straws. Any larger cakes or more than 3 tiers should have a central dowel/support and larger dowels.
• Ensure that you use a moist cake when making naked cakes since they don’t have an outer layer of icing to protect it from drying out. If you are worried about the cake being dry, you can brush sugar syrup over the cake before decorating to keep it moist.

But how will you do this, in a way that makes sense of all the vintage wedding loveliness that is currently whirling around in your head? Organising a wedding can be daunting when you have never done one before, but you can pull off the vintage look yourself all you need is to know where to begin and what to look for.

There’s no need to feel daunted by vintage décor design once you know some basic rules. Ask yourself what element of your wedding means the most to you. Is it the ceremony or the tablescapes? By pinpointing your wants and needs you’ll better be able to set and control your budget. Remember it’s not about having everything matching and symmetrical so arrange your décor items in odd numbers rather than evens. Add depth and interest to your décor by pairing cool neutrals and understated pastels with the deeper tones of matured woods and antique finishes.

So where do you look for these vintage treasures? Markets, garage sales and auctions are a treasure trove of long-forgotten gems and curious finds. The earlier in the morning you can climb out of bed, the more goodies you will have to choose from. It’s well worth prying your eyes open while it’s still dark but be sure to take along essential supplies like a torch and lots of strong coffee! Cash is king here so be prepared as few vendors accept credit cards. A tape measure, a pen and notebook are also an essential part of your vintage-hunting kit. Don’t be afraid to haggle, but be fair. Very often vendors will set a price knowing buyers will want to negotiate them down. Lastly, compare prices even though you are dying to secure your amazing find and be sure about a piece before you part with your cash as you can’t return it later. Be flexible and open minded when hunting for vintage décor as clever DIY treatments can transform the everyday item into a special piece. Try garage sales for tracking down leftover craft materials and you’ll find much better value for money than at a regular store.

If you’re more of an online treasure hunter try the evergreen favorites like eBay and Etsy to score a bargain. We’ve also seen stylish and quirky online stores like Lark become popular on the décor scene and I tend to save them for sourcing one or two higher priced gems to finish the final design.

Family, friends and neighbors may be harboring that perfect vintage piece to complete your look and what better way to introduce something personal and intimate into your wedding design? Don’t be tempted to dismiss vintage gems if at first glance you’re not sure how they’ll fit in to your overall idea. Think old board games, books, records, tins, vases and vessels. They’re full of character and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment too.

Vintage and antique shops are a fabulous resource for décor but they can be overwhelming if you feel out of your depth and don’t to know what to look for. Keep control of your budget by combing these Aladdin’s Caves for your smaller, accent items. Not a place to be buying in bulk, but you can have a ball hunting down fun, off-beat details to dress your guest book table or as gifts for your wedding party. Just be sure to keep a keen eye on your budget and take a friend to inspire ideas.

Do you see your wedding infused with cool, quirky details and unique furniture?  Do you long for a lounge area adorned with a velvet sofa and weathered trunks for end tables?  Then a vintage hire company is for you. You can hire everything to bring your vision to life from fine china to chaise lounge and have them take care of everything from styling to ‘day of’ setup. They have been up at the crack of dawn, knee deep in jumble sales and markets and scouring local outlets for the best buys. You can turn your dream into reality by designing your own wedding; it’s simply a matter of following a few steps and working out what you love and what you don’t. Remember to keep it simple as the more details you add, the more over-dressed your wedding will become and you will be in danger of being overwhelmed by the design.

So whether you want to have a professional design experience by hiring a vintage stylist or you love the idea of hunting down some treasures or curious finds at your local markets, the most important thing to remember is to enjoy the journey as it’s a wild vintage ride!
